Tom Slater

Tom began his theatrical career in Europe as an actor at the age of nine. He continues to be actively involved in professional and community theatre, television and film as an actor, director, writer, adjudicator, and consultant.  He is a member of ACTRA and EQUITY.

Currently, Tom heads up one of the most successful high school drama programs in the province where he has taught for over 35 years. A recipient of several teaching awards of excellence, his program is widely recognized for its unique courses of study, which include a touring theatre company bringing plays for young audiences to schools throughout Ontario. In 1998, his play, Reflections, a play about smoking and addiction, was chosen by The Educational Theatre Association as one of the top 10 shows in the world and selected to represent Canada at the prestigious International Thespian Festival. In 2000, his play, Intimate Betrayal, a play on sexual assault, received the same honour. He has written several award-winning plays including: Live On Stage Uncensored, a play on sexuality, King of the Castle, a play on bullying, "A Permanent Solution..."; a play on depression and suicide, I Can't Feel the Rain, a play on HIV, Trapped, a love story for all pronouns and his most recent play, Trapped (Part 2) - The Long Weekend, a continuation of Meg and Eric's romance, where the couple is now faced with questions that will affect the future of their relationship.

His play about depression and suicide, "A Permanent Solution..." had a successful professional tour in 2014/15 and was directed by Tom. He also directed the professional Ontario tour of Dave Deveau's "Out in the Open in 2015/16.

Organizations actively seek out Tom and commission his plays because they are poignant, powerful, educational works that reach young audiences without preaching. Always written in modern vernacular, his edgy, truthful works offer hope to teenagers in this age of uncertainty.

He currently resides in Guelph, Ontario with his wonderful family.
