Samah Sabawi

Samah Sabawi is a Canadian Australian poet, playwright and essayist of Palestinian origin.  Her recent play Tales of a City by the Sea enjoyed a sold-out world premiere run in 2014 at Melbourne's La Mama Theatre, and is set to tour six Australian cities in 2016. The play was selected for the 2016 Victorian Certificate of Education drama and theatre studies playlist and will be tought to hundreds of year 11 and 12 students in Victoria.  Tales of a City by the Sea also had an Arabic language premier run at Alrowwad Theatre and Cutlural Society in Aida Refugee Camp in Occupied Palestine.

Samah Sabawi has written and produced the plays Cries from the Land (2003) and Three Wishes (2008) both were staged successfully in Canada.  Her essays and opeds have appeared in various media outlets including The Australian, AlJazeera, AlAhram, The Globe and Mail, The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald amongst many others. Her poetry has been featured in various magazines and books, most recently in an anthology published by West End Press titled With Our Eyes Wide Open: Poems of the New American Century.  A collection of her poetry will be published in 2016 by Novum Publishing in an anthology titled I REMEMBER MY NAME.  

Samah Sabawi is currently working on developing her most recent play THEM and is co-editing an anthology of Jewish and Palestinian plays from diaspora for the Playwrights Canada Press, Canada’s major publisher and distributor of Canadian drama.
