Madeleine Marie Dahlem

Madeleine Blais Dahlem is a bilingual playwright from Saskatchewan. She holds a B.A.(Hon), B.Ed, and M.A. from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon where she presently lives. Her first plays were YA, written for a French Immersion drama club which she founded in 1992. She has been professionally produced in French by La Troupe du Jour, Saskatchewan's only French language theatre. Her 2011 production, La maculée (sTain) earned for her the Outstanding Playwrighting Award from SATAwards. She was invited to the Women Playwrights International Conference in Stockholm Sweden in 2012 to present selections of the English version, sTain, which was also anthologized in New Canadian Realisms, 2012.

"As a bilingual playwright, I alternate between French and English drafts as I develop my plays. I spend a lot of time in that no-man's land between the two. It is not a war zone for me but a challenging and creatively rich place. The end result in each case is two plays, one in English and one in French which are not necessarily faithful translations of each other, but rather transcreations influenced by verbal and cultural taboos, values and practices."
