Janet Irwin


Janet Irwin has been working in Canadian Theatre since the mid 1970s.  She has mounted productions for many organizations:  National Arts Centre English Theatre, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Opera Lyra Ottawa, Great Canadian Theatre Company, St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival, Odyssey Theatre, Platypus Theatre, Easy Street Productions, Third Wall Theatre, Deluxe Hot Sauce, Upper Canada Playhouse, The Gladstone Theatre, Manitoba Popular Theatre and RiderGirl Productions.  She is a  a member of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association, Playwrights Guild of Canada, and a former President of Theatre Ontario. 

As playwright/ librettist Janet has written Side Effects, (an agitprop treatment of the pharmaceutical industry and the drugging of women), a libretto, The River, for Caravan StageBarge  two plays and an opera libretto based on Brian Doyle’s Angel Square (NAC and Opera Lyra) and Easy Avenue (GCTC, co-written with Alan Davis), and A Seaway Story, (Upper Canada Playhouse, written in part with James Fagan Tait.) Her adaptation of Mozart/Da Ponte's Cosi Fan Tutte, They All Do It  was produced by Odyssey Theatre in 2010. Her current writing assignment is  an adaptation for the theatre of Brian Doyle’s Up To Low for Easy Street Productions. She is also co-writing an adaptation of Mark Frutkin's Fabrizio's Return, with Bill Bhaneja.

She is company dramaturg for Odyssey Theatre.
