David Elendune

David is an award winning Victoria playwright who’s currently best known for adapting a wide variety of external source materials. He has been trained in all disciplines of stagecraft in England by John Sichel, who previously directed such knights of the stage and screen as Oliver, Bates, Guinness, & Richardson.

His recently produced plays (LEER, FRANKENSTEIN, WINNIE THE POOH, CASINO ROYALE, ONE NINE EIGHT FOUR, GOOD NIGHT UNCLE JOE, ONO) have been successes locally, nationally, and internationally. These were reviewed as: Meaty, Cerebral, Powerful - An Ultimately Rewarding Experience - Fascinating To Watch - A Delight To Be Seen By All!

David's latest play, LEER, received its world premier this summer, winning both best drama, and best new work at the Victoria Fringe... Its script also placed as a finalist at the University Of California's Ground & Field Theatre Festival.

Other recent successes include: David's national award-winning script of FRANKENSTEIN debuting at The Pearl Theatre, Hamilton. FRANKENSTEIN is booked for a sophomore production in Victoria for Halloween 2018. David's cold war drama GOOD NIGHT UNCLE JOE has recently been translated into Polish and will be given a public reading at Sopot in the fall.

David is a long time active board member of PGC’s CANADIAN PLAYS IN CANADIAN COMMUNITIES initiative. This winter he also originated & co-organised THE JAZZ P@GE (a season of intimate evenings designed to showcase the works of lower island playwrights). In the spring he wrote & performed in Vancouver a piece about his disability experience with rheumatoid arthritis at CAN YOU SEE US?

Next summer will see the premier of his new play SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE CURSE OF MORIARTY in Victoria BC.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

David is primarily an author of high concept intelligent entertainment who aims to surprise, & engage new & established theatre audiences. He wants to encourage them to live & react in the moment but also reflect afterwards upon the meaning of what they have witnessed and, if so inclined, question the morality of their reactions.
