PGC's Women's Caucus Honours Diane Brown with the 2017 Bra D'Or Award
February 6, 2017 - Playwrights Guild of Canada’s Bra D’Or Award was presented to Diane Brown, Artistic Director of Ruby Slippers Theatre in Vancouver, BC. PGC member Carmen Aguirre presented the award to Diane this past weekend at Gateway Theatre.
Carmen Aguirre: "Diane is the absolutely perfect recipient for this award. She is Artistic Director of Ruby Slippers Theatre, founded in 1989 by a collective of women artists who wanted to change the world. Diane has a 27 year history of producing and commissioning works by women. She recently created and initiated the Advance Theatre : New Works by Women five day festival (in partnership with Equity in Theatre and The Vancouver Fringe Festival), which showcases five new plays by diverse Canadian women, all directed by diverse Canadian women. She received over 100 submissions from across Canada last year and this year, and she and Ruby Slippers Theatre are working hard to expand the series to include more works over a longer period of time.
Diane's long history of showcasing works by women has occurred in her company's regular programming such as last season where she produced MainStage productions of The Duchess A.K.A. Wallis Simpson by Linda Griffiths, The List by Jennifer Tremblay and a staged reading of The Crow by Lise Vaillencourt translated by Maureen Lebonté. This season saw a remount of RST’s critically acclaimed production of The List by Jennifer Tremblay, and staged readings of new works by Catherine Leger, translator Leanna Brodie, Quelemia Sparrow and Chloe Packer."
Every year, the Women's Caucus presents an individual in the Canadian theatre community with the Bra D'Or Award in recognition of their efforts in supporting and promoting the work of Canadian women playwrights. Past recipients of the Bra D'Or are Philip Akin, Rebecca Burton, Eric Coates, Rachel Ditor, Katrina Dunn, Hope McIntyre, Andy McKim, Robert Metcalfe, Brian Quirt, and Mary Vingoe.
