Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights

The Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights is given annually to a member of PGC who has premiered an original play within the past year (July 1st 2016 - June 30th 2017)

A juried panel selects the winner from a number of submitted plays. The winner of the Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights receives $5,000 and the option to be published. A shortlist of the best three entries will be announced in September 2017. The winner will be announced during the Tom Hendry Awards in October 2017.

Past recipients: Lisa Codrington, Kent Stetson, Daniel Goldfarb, Florence Gibson, Mieko Ouchi, John Mighton, Stephen Massicotte, Colleen Murphy, Vern Thiessen, Michael Nathanson, Anusree Roy, Don Hannah, Jordan Tannahill, and David Yee. 

Funding for the award is generously sponsored by Playwrights Canada Press, Pat the Dog Theatre Creation, Playwrights' Atlantic Resource Centre, PTC- Playwrights Theatre Centre, Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre, and Playwrights Guild of Canada.

RBC Emerging Playwright Award

An award that will give up-and-coming playwrights the opportunity to win a 6-month mentorship with a professional playwright of their choice, from our 600+ playwrights roster as well as a $2000 cash prize. The award will be presented at the 2017 Tom Hendry Awards and the winner will be provided with a special event featuring a live reading of their work in their province of residence."

Submissions are open for any supporting or student member of Playwrights Guild of Canada who has never had a professional production and have never been full members of PGC. Must submit a full length play (see applications form for details)

Stage West Pechet Family Comedy Award

This award is given annually for a new comedy by a PGC-member, which has not yet had a premiere production as of June 30th, 2017. This award is worth $5000.

Stage West Pechet Family Musical Award

This award is given annually for a new musical work by a PGC-member, which has not yet had a premiere production as of June 30th, 2017. This award is worth $5000.

Past recipients: Jay Turvey & Paul Sportelli, Amiel Gladstone & Veda Hille, Lorne Elliott, Irene Sankoff & David Hein, and Kent Staines (with Akiva Romer-Segal and Colleen Dauncey).

Lifetime Membership

To be honoured as a Lifetime Member, a playwright must be nominated by members and approved by the National Forum. Criteria include recognition for a body of work, and/or service to Playwrights Guild of Canada and the theatre community. Membership dues are waived.

All current members of Playwrights Guild of Canada are welcome to forward nominations for Lifetime Membership.

Honorary Membership

Honorary members may not be a playwright. An individual or organization is awarded for their contribution to Canadian playwrights and must be nominated by PGC members and approved by the National Forum.

Past recipients: Angela Rebeiro, Joan Chalmers, Albert-Reiner Glaap, Toyoshi Yoshihara, Virginia Roncetti, Edmonton Fringe Festival, and Iris Turcotte.

Bra D'Or Award

Every year, the Women's Caucus recognizes an individual for his/her efforts in supporting and promoting the work of Canadian women playwrights.

Past recipients: Rebecca Burton, Brian Quirt, Hope McIntyre, Katrina Dunn, Eric Coates, Andy McKim, Philip Akin, Rachel Ditor, Robert Metcalfe, Mary Vingoe, and Rebecca Burton.

Post-Secondary Playwriting Competition

PGC's Post-Secondary Playwriting Competition is a free  competition open to all full-time post-secondary students across Canada. The first place winner of this competition is awarded $1,000 and $750 is given to the second place winner.
